ENGLISH :

For this new Breton release, Editentités is proud to welcome transe ar gwez from Rennes, delivering four remixes paying tribute to the diverse and engaging discography of musician and composer Roland Becker.

By collaborating with other artists, but more importantly on his solo albums, Roland Becker used his deep knowledge of Breton culture and music to explore and experiment different styles and practices: celtic jazz (Fallaën, 1982), ethnomusicology and song collecting (Jour de fête & fête de nuit, 1995), electronic music (Chants dans la nuit - Kanou an noz, 2008), Breton folklore and popular melodies (Immrama, 2010)… Tracks Locqueltas, Bortifaouen et Mané Guen are taken from this last record, while Kan Dek is built from a bonus section of the album Chants dans la nuit - Kanou an noz.

On Locqueltas, transe ar gwez handpicks elements of the complex arrangement of Roland Becker, made of ancient instruments and a myriad of drums. He rearranges these pieces around a deep sub used as the spinal tap of the track, embellished with a few percussive hits and delay tracks to create a sort of obsessing medieval dub.

For Bartifaouen, the producer from Rennes reworks the acoustic drones and rhythms of Becker’s composition. Just like the rest of the album Immrama, this track was made with modal scales and irregular rhythms in 5, 7, 11, 13 or 17 beats, typical of the region of Vannes. This singular time signature could surprise DJs used to count in 4/4, but it will naturally carry the dancers in a panting vortex.

During the long introduction made of drones and trancy arpeggios of Kan Dek, we can’t help but hold our breath, foreseeing what is to come: a sharp breakbeat driven by an insisting hurdy-gurdy and a deep bass, before climaxing with Becker’s bombarde entrance. Almost six minute of ecstasy, rebuilt from a loop less than a minute long.

Last track, Mané Guen, seems to be made from only one note and its multiple variations. During 8 hypnotic minutes, transe ar gwez builds a wall of sound around the original composition, and plays with its organic rhythms, adding distorted kick drums and granular pulses.

Eventually, Roland Becker himself explains it best: “Breton music, if it can be summed up, is just a note. The rest is a pretext.”

FRANCAIS :
